At first glance, Levi the tax collector seems an unlikely candidate for discipleship; tax collectors were, after all, considered to be an especially distasteful brand of sinner.  Yet in this brief passage, we behold the awesome power of Jesus' call, the new life that he provides for his people, and the unparalleled hope that he offers to sinners.
